Sword and buckler fencing appeared in manuscript l.33 dated the 1300th years. Buckler was very popular as second-hand weapon in both war and peaceful time. It’s very comfortable to be carried and doesn’t prevent you from using your main weapon, a bow or a spear for example. Buckler is the most often used in a combination with a sword, later – with a Renaissance sword or a rapier. With the flaw of time the sword + buckler combination is replaced with a rapier + daga combination.
In modern historical fencing the combination of a sword and a buckler is widely distributed and popular. In some variations of armored battle (HMB, IMCF) the combination of a sword and a buckler is often encountered in group battles. Also, the duel nomination sword-buckler is included in the program of the HMB World Championship. In the modern HEMA fencing buckler is often used on different tournaments and trainings together with rapier, arming sword or side-sword.
