Italian foil is very light thrust weapon that evolved from the Renaissance rapier. It was most popular at the end of the XVII and the beginning of XVIII. It appeared in France, and spread widely in all Europe. XIX was the period of widest popularity of such swords, as sport weapons. In XX it was upgraded to modern olympic fencing foil.
Foil is mounted with steel dish cup and true ricasso to save part of authenticity.
In modern hema fencing, various tournaments in the Smallsword nomination are held according to different rules, with different tolerances for the length of the blade, model and weight of the weapon, etc., depending on the studied period.
